Alappuzha The ‘venice of the East’ famous for amazing backwaters. Boat Race, Houseboats, Beaches. Mullakkal Rajeshwary Temple, Marine products and Coir industry.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It is held annually on the second Saturday of August at the Vembanad lake and is the most important tourist event of Alappuzha. Boats sponsored by different villages compete iercely in the competition. The highlights of this prestigious event is “Chundan Vallam”, the 130 feet long snake boats, with over 100 rowers, 4 helmsmen and 25 cheer leaders, decorated with colourful silk umbrellas. The race is also held during the tourist season on the third day of the Great Elephant March in mid January and is called as ‘Tourism Snakeboat Race’.
Alappuzha – Kollam Backwater Trip – It is organized by ATDC. The Journey begins at 10.30 am, and reaches Kollam at 6.00 pm. The boat passes through exotic locations and gives a close view of the scenic countryside.
AMBALAPUZHA – Pilgrim centre, Sri Krishna Temple famous for its architecture and ‘palapayasam’ – a sweet milk porridge.
ARTHUNKAL PALLI – Christian pilgrim centre. St.Andrews Church here was built by Portuguese missionaries.
CHAMBAKULAM CHURCH – The St.Mary’s Church, one of the oldest church in Kerala is said to be built by St.Thomas.
CHAVARA BHAVAN – The ancestral home of the blessed Kuriakose Eliqas Chavara. Thousands of devotees gather at this shrine and spiritual resort.
MAVELIKKARA – Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple famous for Kettukazhcha festival held in Feb/Mar.
EDATHUA CHURCH – It is said that prayers and offerings here help in healing mental disorders and other ailments.
KARUMADI – Famous for 9th or 10th century black granite ido of Lord Budha known as Karumadi Kuttan.
KRISHNAPURAM PALACE – The magnificent palace is a master piece of Kerala architecture. A museum here displays antique sculptures and paintings.
KRTTANAD REGION – Land of lush paddy fields is perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done below sea level.
MANNARSHALA – Ancient temple dedicated to Sree Nagaraja, the king of serpents.
QST & R BLOCK KAYAL – These regions are famous for farming over reclaimed land from the backwaters.
PATHIRAMANAL – First island resort of the State. Located in Vembanad lake and attracts rare migratory birds from various parts of the world.
