Kerala provides a good range of quality hotels which offer fantastic accommodation and deliver great customer service. Some say that the local spicy food may possibly be the best on the planet, however if you are not one for spicy food many of the better hotels cater for the European traveler.
The group’s hotels now boast of Bangaram Island Resort in Lakshadweep, Spice Village in Thekkady, Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom, Spice Coast Cruises in Vembanad, Marari Beach Resort in Mararikulam, Brunton Boatyard in Fort Cochin, SwaSwara in Gokarna, Karnataka & Kalari Kovilakom in Kollengode. The Kalari Kovilakom, is a conservation of an 1860 built Keralan Palace which is converted into a Palace for Ayurveda. The group has been the recipient of many awards of excellence in tourism, environment and heritage protection, from the State & Central Governments as well as the Green Globe Awards from the World Travel Mart. Whilst we are on the subject of hotel recommendations, during my last visit to Kerala I stayed at Koder House which is a meeting place of the past and the present. Ideally located in the historic part of Fort Cochin, this is an absolutely charming threestorey boutique hotel with a distinctive red façade. Previously the ancestral home of the Koders, a prominent Cochin Jewish family, this centuries’ old property has been renovated as a tribute to the rich mixed culture of the area – a mélange of Portuguese, Dutch, Kerala and even Chinese influences.
They could have turned this the property into a 12 room hotel but I am glad that they instead opted to maintain it’s original features with just six spacious double room suites, two lounges on each floor, a library, small pool and the famous hanging bridge. A definite must stay for those romantic couples.
